When you have a long trip ahead of you, shedding 2-5 pounds of luggage off your back is HUGE! It means that extra mile, it means far less back pain, it means you can possibly pack something else! But when shopping lean luggage, there are always trade-offs.  It’s always great to have at least online ultralight bag in your possession, especially if you are a frequent traveller.  (I’d also recommend an ultra light stroller for family travel!)  So here we go, let’s discuss the best ultralight luggage, and talk about the truth in trade-offs.

Luggage Tradeoff –  Less Sturdy

Anytime you take away weight from a bag, you lose a bit from the construction.  If your bag is going to be heavy handled and passed through numerous ports or airport cargos, your ultra-light bag isn’t going to have the sturdy construction to hold up to the test of time.  However, if you are looking to mostly carry your bag with you as a carryon, or treat it with more care, then that’s going to help with the longevity of the bag.

I’lightweight packing ideas luggageve come to depend on my Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside Luggage for air travel.  This suitcase is SO ultralight, my arms aren’t killing me as I carry it through the airport.  It has definitely served me well, and I’ve come to rely on it as a “go-to” bag for short trips as well.  The tradeoffs?  The wheels are thinner than on some of my other suitcases.  So it can feel less stable when I’m propping it up.  It can also feel a little top-heavy at times, so I’m careful when trying make the bag stand.  Also to note, the handle is shaped like a T-bar, making it harder to handle than the U-shapped handles on the market.  However, both these trade-offs are totally necessary to make this bag ultra-light.  Neither of these trade-offs mattered enough to me to not enjoy the use of this bag, but it’s something to consider when purchasing.  You can check out this bag on Amazon here

Luggage Tradeoff – Fewer Features

The sturdiness of the luggage is not the only trade-off to consider, the bags tend to offer consumers fewer features. If you don’t mind missing out on a few bells-and-whistles, then we highly recommend the AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner Luggage. It’s affordable, ultra-light weight and another great option for a light bag that is still great quality. The

Luggage Tradeoff – Organization

For many travelers this would drive them nuts.
